3.5 Bachelor of Community Rehabilitation - Registration

Continuity of Program

Students whose registration has been inactive for 12 months must reapply for admission and will be required to meet current BCR program requirements if readmitted. Readmission is not guaranteed. See B.12 Residency Requirements, Letters of Permission and Leaves of Absence in the Academic Regulations section of this Calendar for more information.

Permission to Complete Courses at Another Institution

Students who wish to take courses at another post-secondary institution may apply online for such authorization by requesting a Letter of Permission through their online Student Centre. Students should check with the BCR Office prior to registering at another institution. The maximum number of units that may be applied to a bachelor’s degree at the University of Calgary is 60 units (see: B.12 Residency Requirements, Letters of Permission and Leaves of Absence). Post-diploma students who have 60-units of block transfer credit are therefore ineligible to take additional credits towards their degree at another post-secondary institution.

Repeating Courses

Students may repeat a course previously attempted (including withdrawals) only once without permission of the Faculty office. Practicum courses offered by Community Rehabilitation and Disability Studies may not be repeated after a failing grade has been received without:

(a) The prior consent of the Associate Dean (Undergraduate Health and Science Education);
(b) Presenting evidence of having made an attempt to overcome previous difficulties encountered;
(c) Waiting a reasonable period of time (one semester to one calendar year) prior to repetition.

Withdrawal from Courses

A student who wishes to withdraw from a course must do so before the deadline specified in the Academic Schedule.

Students will not be permitted to withdraw more than once from a particular course. When students accumulate withdrawals of 30 units while in attendance at the University of Calgary, the Associate Dean may impose a registration restriction and in extreme cases may require a student to withdraw from the Cumming School of Medicine.

Immunization Requirements

BCR students and students taking Community Rehabilitation (CORE) courses involving practicum placements are required to meet an immunization standard as outlined on the Student Immunization Form checklist. Documented proof of completion must be provided to the Cumming School of Medicine Immunization Co-ordinator or delegate prior to commencement of the program (for BCR students) or first practicum placement (for non-BCR students). Failure to do so will result in students being removed from practicum courses, or being placed in an alternate environment until such time as adequate proof has been provided. In the event of extenuating medical circumstances impacting immunization status, students may be accommodated at a practicum site without immunization requirement (such sites are limited).

Throughout the BCR program, students are required to ensure that immunizations are current and must provide proof of updates to the Cumming School of Medicine Immunization Co-ordinator. Please note that requirements may change during the program as determined by practicum partner site guidelines.

Police Information Check

A current and clear Police Information Check, which includes a Criminal Record Check and a Vulnerable Sector Search, is required for practicum placements with community agencies. Students must arrange for a Police Information Check through their nearest police service or RCMP detachment in the area where they reside. Students who do not present a clear Police Information Check may not receive a practicum placement and as a result, may not be able to continue in the BCR program. Successful completion of practicum courses is required for graduation.

The original Police Information Check must be presented to and accepted by the Practicum Coordinator, dated within timelines as directed by the Practicum Coordinator. Students may also need to present the original police information check to the partner practicum site on the first day of each placement (CORE 207, 487, 594, 595), and as requested by the Practicum Coordinator.

Students are obligated to inform the Cumming School of Medicine (through the BCR Practicum Coordinator) immediately of any change in status to their criminal record. Not doing so could result in being removed from the practicum placement.

The University of Calgary, located in the heart of Southern Alberta, both acknowledges and pays tribute to the traditional territories of the peoples of Treaty 7, which include the Blackfoot Confederacy (comprised of the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations), the Tsuut’ina First Nation, and the Stoney Nakoda (including Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations). The city of Calgary is also home to the Métis Nation within Alberta (including Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6).

The University of Calgary is situated on land Northwest of where the Bow River meets the Elbow River, a site traditionally known as Moh’kins’tsis to the Blackfoot, Wîchîspa to the Stoney Nakoda, and Guts’ists’i to the Tsuut’ina. On this land and in this place we strive to learn together, walk together, and grow together “in a good way.”
